SCIENTIFIC PROGRAM

Named Lectures

GB Ong Lecture

Prof. GB Ong was the founder and also the first President of the Asian Surgical Association (the then Association of Surgeons of South East Asia) in 1976. In recognition of Prof. Ong’s substantial contribution to the surgical world and celebration of the twentieth anniversary of the Association, the GB Ong Lecture was named in 1997. Prof. Murray Brennan from USA was the first GB Ong orator at the 11th Biennial Congress of the Association held in 1997 in Hong Kong.

Law-Lui Lecture

The Law-Lui Lecture was named at the request of the donor, Mr. Lorenco Lui, who was a patient of Prof. GB Ong and underwent gastrocystoplasty for bladder augmentation. Mrs. Law-Lui was Mr. Lui’s sister and he named the Lecture in her honor. The 1st Law-Lui lecture was delivered by Dr. Lloyd M. Nyhus from USA at the 3rd Biennial Congress in 1981 in Jakarta, Indonesia.

RACS Foundation Lecture

The RACS Lecture at the Biennial Asian Surgical Association Conference was set up in 1983 by Professor Richard Bennett as part of the RACS Foundation educational and international activities. The first RACS Foundation Lecture was given in Singapore in 1985. The Travelling Fellowship is awarded biennially (every 2 years).

The RACS Fellow is nominated by the Asian Surgical Association Executive Committee based on specific areas of surgical practice which they wish to highlight at their conference. The RACS Foundation funds the airfare of a RACS Fellow selected by the Asian Surgical Association Executive Committee while the Asian Surgical Association meets the cost of registration, accommodation and travel within the country. Recipients may be required (in addition to making scientific presentations) to speak briefly at formal or social functions.
